Project Info
Project Description
We work with communities to keep children, and in some cases focus on girls, by addressing the real barriers: poverty & Hunger, harmful cultural practices, and lack of proper school infrastructure. From scholarships to school feeding and infrastructure to make education possible where it’s needed most. While education is seen as a basic right elsewhere, even enshrined in our Kenyan constitution, in many Indigenous and rural communities like ours, it is still a struggle tied to inequality, marginalization, and harmful cultural norms. Girls drop out due to early marriage or FGM. Some children never step into a classroom because formal education is not seen as a priority. Others drop out simply because there’s no food, no fees, or no school nearby.
Our Approach
🎓 Education Scholarships & Bursaries
We provide financial and in-kind support to cover school fees, uniforms, supplies, and transport for children who would otherwise be left out.
Construction of Learning & Support Amenities
We support the building of classrooms, school kitchens, and even community libraries, ensuring learning happens in safe, conducive, and supportive spaces.
🍲 Feeding Programs & School Kitchen Gardens
We support school feeding programs so that hunger doesn’t push kids out of school. To keep this sustainable, we work with expert partners to help schools start kitchen gardens where they grow vegetables and foods like cassava, pumpkins, etc. Surplus is sold to nearby communities, and the income helps buy cereals or cover school needs.
🛑Rescuing Girls from Harmful Cultural Practices like Child Marriage & FGM
We work closely with authorities, local CBOs, and community leaders to rescue and support girls at risk of harmful traditional practices, especially in marginalized areas.
Community Awareness & Capacity Building
At The Soina Foundation, we understand that sometimes, the issue isn’t money, it’s mindset. In communities where formal education is undervalued, we hold dialogues, training, and storytelling sessions to shift the narrative and use success stories to show how education changes lives.
